Hosea used to prophecy in the land of Israel at a time when Northern dynasty experienced decline and came tumbling in the 9th century. The iniquities of the Israelites were just so many given that they no longer followed God’s commandments and instead decided to pray idol gods of Jeroboam who was then their king, and Baal who hailed from Canaan. This is an article on prophetic theology and preaching from Hosea 13 and 14. These are indeed the last two chapters in the book of Hosea. The two chapters revolves around the prophecy of Hosea on how God’s love had slowly but surely ended on the children of Israel. In chapter 13, Hosea predicts on the destruction that awaited Assyria given that they had refused to repent. In chapter 14, Hosea calls upon the children of Israel to ask God for forgiveness, as he would hear them and restore their kingdom. He proceeds to remind them how God had remained faithful to them despite their iniquities (Dearman, 2010).

The prophetic theology simply means the understanding of the highest God that the prophets of Israel had. Looking at chapter thirteen of the book of Hosea, it is evident that he did not have with him some naïve message for the children of Israel. From a prophetic preaching point of view, the prophets of today should not just promise positive life full of good things but point out on the evils on the society according to what God has revealed to them. The first verse in chapter thirteen reminds the children of that they were not likely to be spared given that Ephraim died upon exalting himself. Just like in the society today, the children of Israel continued sinning making craven images according to their own understanding. In the prophetic preaching, the people should be reminded that they are just like the morning cloud and as the early dew that passes away. The prophetic preaching should equally remind them that they are like chaff that is driven with the whirlwind out of the floor or like smoke out of the chimney.

Just like the children of Israel who were delivered from the land of drought by God, so is the society today. From then on, their pastures filled and their hearts were exalted; and therefore they have forgotten God. Putting this into consideration, God will lie in waiting for them like a leopard or a lion. God is promising to meet them like a bear and pounce on them like the wild beast tearing them into pieces. The society in chapter 13 is being reminded that they have indeed destroyed themselves, and it is God only who can save them (Dearman, 2010). God promises to be their king as he will take away the one he assigned them. All the iniquities that have been committed will be restored and their cries would not be heard by God. The society today should either shun evil or bear the wrath of God and all the above mentioned will befall them.

The prophetic theology in chapter fourteen is a sure way to remind the society to return to God as their iniquities have distanced them from God. The crying of the prophet is for the society to go back to God and plead with him to take away their sins, receive them graciously and allow them to render their sacrifices (Buggert, 2006). This is an indication that God is ready to hear them and accept them back. From a preaching point of view, the society is in this case being reminded that God will forget that they had once fallen to obey him and love them back. God’s anger is no more and he promises to be the like dew and let the society blossom like the lily and cast forth its roots like Lebanon. All these promises will only be fulfilled upon the repentance of the society and return to God.

In chapter 14 of the book of Hosea, God calls the society to remember that upon their repentance, their branches shall spread and the beauty shall be like that of the olive tree with a good smell like that of Lebanon. The theological prophecy is that those who dwell under his shadow shall return and God will revive them like corn and they will surely grow like vine. Finally in chapter 14 in the seventh verse, the prophecy reminds the society that all those who have repented their sins have attained a smell of Lebanon wine. The prophet in question should just be like Hosea as he never thought of anxiety he was to suffer or even risk of being rejected. The sins committed by people should not be taken lightly and they should be kept alert that God himself was ready to judge them unless they repented.

In conclusion, true prophetic theology and preaching calls for prophets who are ready to reveal God’s message to people as given to them by God. They should not look at people full of hopelessness but should provide hope without losing focus on God. Finally, Hosea 14 deduces that, after the prophetic theology, the wise man will take things with seriousness. It should be remembered that the ways of God are right and only the just that will walk in them. On the other hand, the transgressors shall surely fall and this will mark their end. Prophetic theology is a sure thing and all the prophets are saying should be heeded (Buggert, 2006).
