There are various practices and prohibitions that signify ideal living in the Muslims community. Some of these practices are:
This is a holy month in the Muslim calendar that signifies the period during which Allah gave Prophet Mohammed the holy Qur'an bringing glory to mankind. It’s in this ninth month of their calendar that Muslims abstain from drinking, eating and sexual intercourse between dusk and dawn. This aims at attaining a spiritual experience the main aim of fasting is so as to be conscious of Allah. This ensures that Muslims are brought together in solidarity and show their compassion to the poor. It’s also a time to increase the qualities of self control, endurance and self restraint. Fasting in the Muslim religion is a pillar of faith. Muslims do not consider it as a time for hardship but a period of charity and spiritual fellowship. This brings them closer to Allah which in return helps them from committing the Hiram. During this period Muslims must strictly follow the timetable (Rippin, 2005).
Dress code and physical contact among Muslim women
Muslim womn should observe a strict dress code especially in public places. Hijab is used by the Muslim women to cover their hair. This follows The Prophet’s command that when a girl attains puberty, no part of the body should be exposed apart from the hands and the face. This code of dressing therefore signifies obedience to God and submissive to his authority. It’s a sign of modesty and purity. It’s also a sign of shield and The Holy Qur'an says that any woman who takes of her clothes other than in her husband’s house has broken Allah’s shield upon her. The hijab is also Ghee rah which seeks to keep off social immorality of men admiring women to whom they are not married to. This also helps in preventing arousal to men and thus reduces rates of sexual harassments and rape cases which have deeply thrived in the other societies.
The Muslim religion prohibits shaking hands with a member of the opposite sex. Islam is a way of life and thus seeks to protect its people from shameful deeds. This is regarded as fornication and should be avoided. Hand shaking leads to lust amonng the parties and this may lead to sin; therefore this prohibition seeks to enhance chastity and a sense of consciousness in both genders.
Feeding habits among Muslims
Food and drinks do have a direct effect on our health but pork is forbidden among the Muslims to maintain hygiene and purity of the soul. Pork is prohibited in the Qur'an four different places (2:173, 5:3, 6:145 and 16:115.). Through abstinence from eating pork, Muslims avoid contracting viral and bacterial diseases such as swine flu and cistercercosis. Pork contains high levels of cholesterol fats that can cause diseases such as atherosclerosis and heart attacks. They also prohibits consumption of pork due to its behaviors such as laziness gluttonous and even its dirt so they can try to bring out a clear cause as to why they themselves should not have such behaviors. During the period of Idd-Ul-Fitr which marks the end of Ramadan in the Muslim calendar, Muslims should share food and drinks with the poor which proves their generosity and the new spiritual being attained in the past month of Ramadan (Rippin, 2005).
