According to Thoreau, unjust laws exist in the United States government. After he had presented, Thoreau gave his own perspectives on how citizens are supposed to react to the injustices of their government. Thoreau believed that voting was not an appropriate solution for citizens to achieve an injustice free government. He contends that when citizens vote for justice they feebly express their feeling that the right persist. A wise person will not give room for injustice as a result of the majority vote because the majority will vote their interest and neglect the interest of the minority citizens. According to Thoreau, a person is referred to as principled when he or she can act according to their conscience (Thoreau 9). Following one’s moral sense can counteract the situation of injustice within a government. This can involve the discontinuation of associating with the unjust laws through various techniques such as protestations. Thoreau protested against slavery as he refused to pay his poll tax by taking the risk of being imprisoned.

Thoreau asserts that an actual positive change would take place if citizens were to risk imprisonment, or risk any severe action from the government. He was imprisoned after refusing to pay tax which was a protestation against slavery. Thoreau asserts that a prison is a true place for just people if a government imprisons any person unjustly. According to Thoreau, a person can live in prison with honor among his or her fellow injustice victims. Taking a risk of imprisonment is to put one’s own whole weight on violating the unjust governmental laws. Through this, the minority becomes irresistible and the government will take the alternative of eliminating its unjust laws and policies. Therefore, Thoreau did not feel confined when he was imprisoned because this was a way of enhancing reformation of the government.

According to Thoreau, the State supports the unjust laws and policies because it can own all his property and molest his family when he refuses to pay tax while protesting against slavery which is unjust treatment. Therefore, the State makes the lives of the just people to be very hard. He is therefore against the State because, instead of rectifying the unjust laws and policies, it takes a step of harassing those people who stand for justice. Thoreau perceives the State’s penalty against civil disobedience to cost him less than it can cost him when he will obey its commands.
