Personality is distinctive qualities, most likely, those that distinguish personal characteristics and make one socially appealing. It can also be said to be total qualities and traits, as of characters, that are known only to a particular person. Personality embraces a person’s mood, attitude, opinions, motivations, and style of thinking, perceiving, speaking, and acting. Many theories about personality existed, most of them trying to define personality and what makes most people to show different personalities.
Some events that occur in our life may result to one changing some traits and still develop new one. For instance, some people can change their personality from uncompassionate to being compassionate and mindful about other peoples’ affairs. Agreeable people are liked more compared to disagreeable people. There are some aspects of personality. They include extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism and openness to experience. One can possesses these five aspects to a greater or lesser degree.
Extraversion is characterized by prominent engagement with external world. People who possess this aspect are called extraverts. They enjoy being with people, are always full of energy, and experience positive emotions. They are always action- oriented. This kind of people like helping other and spend most of the time encouraging them. At their free time, they can visit old people and help them accomplish their duties. One may have interest in such a field and hence pursue a course that is related to what he likes doing. People who behave exactly opposite to extraverts are called introverts. They lack energy, they are quite and always don’t like being engaged in social world.
Agreeableness reflects individual differences in concern with social harmony and cooperation. People who are agreeable like getting a long with others. They are always considerate, helpful, generous, friendly, and they like compromising their interest with others’. They have positive view of human nature. They believe that people are always decent, trustworthy and honest. They also like doing voluntary work and helping the needy. On the other hand disagreeable people don’t like agreeing along with others peoples’ interest. They are not always concerned with others’ wellbeing; hence they are unlikely to extend their helpful hand to others. Their skeptical nature makes them suspicious and unfriendly to others. Agreeableness is advantageous since one attains and maintains popularity. Disagreeable people can make good soldiers, critics and scientists.
Conscientiousness is concerned by the way people control, direct and regulates their impulses. Impulses are not bad, they make one make quick decisions when there is time constraints. People who act on their first impulse always make an effective response. Acting impulsively can be fun, colorful, and others like to be with such people. Despite its importance, acting on impulse can result to troubles in some ways. Few impulses can be unsocial. Uncontrolled unsocial acts do not only affect the members of the society but can also affect the initiator of such impulse acts. Impulse acts can produce an undesirable rewards, and long-term consequences. For instance, excessive socialization may result to one being fired from the job. An insult can lead to the break up of essential relationship. High conscientiousness has some benefits. Conscientious people avoid trouble and achieve high levels of success through good planning and persistence.
Openness to experience describes a dimension of cognitive style that distinguishes imaginative, creative people from down-to-earth, convectional people. Open people are intellectually curious, appreciative of art, and sensitive to beauty. They are always aware of their feelings. Open people are adventurous. This means, they are eager to try new activities, travel to the neighboring land to learn and experience new things. These kinds of people are likely to pursue career such as tourism. They always like debating over intellectual issues. They like to be involved in artistic and natural events. It’s not necessary for one to be artistically trained, but most of them will be.
Those who have high neuroticism experience some specific feelings such as anxiety, anger, or depression. They respond to some emotionally events that do not affect many people. They like interpreting ordinary situation as threatening, and full of frustration and difficult. People who experience low neuroticism are less easily upset and less emotionally reactive. They are always calm and emotionally stable.
It is true to say that, some specific events that someone gets experience in can lead to developing an interest toward such them. People who like travelling and exploring new things may end up pursuing a course that is related to that interest. People who like debating and are skeptical in nature can end up being politicians or scientists. Those who are agreeable are likely to be compassionate to the needy people hence may end up being nurses and counselors to these people.
