A common premise is that nurses are born, not made (Schrock, 1981) defines philosophy of nursing as the ideologies or unexamined presuppositions which affect attitudes and practices. My personal philosophy of nursing centers on the premise: the purpose of nursing is to promote health, growth, development and to prevent disease or disability. My nursing principles and ideologies will emphasize on the personalization of care, offering it with compassion while being culture-sensitive.

Nursing integrates the essential components of patient care, education, research, advocacy, and community service. The nursing care of patients is holistic and attends to the physical, socio-cultural, developmental and spiritual needs. Each nurse has the responsibility for delivering patient care that embraces the patient's values and lifestyle and acknowledges the importance of enabling patient independence and patient satisfaction (Chilly and Black, 2007). This approach when applied by nurses embraces a continuum of services that encompasses every level of care throughout. This in turn facilitates recovery.

Choice of Nursing

The motivators of my decision to choose nursing largely correspond to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) definition of nursing’s mission. Nursing as my preference allows me to promote and maintain health. This way, I minimize distress and suffering allowing individuals to understand and cope with diseases, treatment and its consequences. My key principle is to maintain the best possible quality of life to its end if death is indeed inevitable. Nursing is a physical, intellectual, emotional and a moral process that empowers me to offer intervention services, personal care, advocacy, education, advice and holistic support (physical, social, emotional, spiritual). In addition, through nursing, I am better placed in patient care, management practice and teaching and policy development.

I intend to achieve my driving forces behind nursing through education, experience, advocacy and working with patients and their families, dispersion of information, teamwork and my outstanding communication skills. In addition, my personal qualities of compassion, respect, integrity and non-judgmental approach will serve as a great asset in attainment of my personal and career goals.

Essence of Nursing

The fundamental nature of nursing care for patients and their family is individualized, compassionate and culturally acceptable. Holistic, coordinated, and effective patient care is based on scientific and ethical principles, research findings, cultural understanding and experience-based intuition. Similarly, nursing should create a work climate for nurses that nurtures and supports clinical expertise, education, shared governance and research, fostering the recruitment and retention of nursing staff who demonstrate the highest integrity, competence, and qualifications. Success in the nursing practice is achieved through a mechanism of collective authority that in turn promotes the involvement of the professional nurse in interdisciplinary partnership and provides venues for the nurse to advocate for the patient in clinical and organizational decision-making.

Beliefs and Values

Proper care of patients is of paramount importance in any nurse’s activities. Nurses should therefore seek to collaborate with patients, families, and other members of a multi disciplinary team to plan and provide nursing care that will achieve an optimal level of health and wellness, or when this is not possible, support the affected during the experience of loss and death.

The patient should experience healthcare in all aspects with utmost respect, confidentiality and integrity. The role of the nurse is to recognize and use the knowledge and caring experience to provide the best possible care. Patients should also be allowed to convey their opinions and feelings which in turn serve as reference if counseling services are to be offered. Patients also have a right to feedback on their progress in health.

The patient’s family is charged with a great responsibility of promoting collaborative and integrated services for patients by ensuring smooth transition between health care providers and the patient. The family and caregivers maintain an environment of care in the needs of the patient through focus on health promotion and minimization of lifestyle factors that may compromise health.

The nurse’s health is important and should not be openly exposed to risks. Support, either physical or psychological should be offered to the nurses and other health care staff who struggle to save and improve other people’s lives. Trauma counseling should be offered after suffering an ordeal.

Vision of the Future

My plans for  two years which are relatively short-termed is to provide quality patient care with unrelenting attention to clinical excellence, patient safety and an unparalleled passion and commitment to assure the very best healthcare for those I serve.I strive to deliver the best to every patient every day. The patient is the first priority in everything I do, serving them with integrity and respect.

After five years I strive to perform and berecognized for my contribution and sacrifice for the benefit of the patient in the enhancement of health of the communities I serve. Similarly, I intend to be involved in works of cooperation with other organizations to protect vulnerable populations throughout the region.

In the long-term (up to ten years), I seek to establish a nurse education facility that will be involved in education, assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation. I will comprehensively design a model that aims to modify the focal, contextual, or residual stimuli in a manner that seeks to promote adaptation and minimize ineffective responses. This way, I strive to be the recognized source and renowned leader for innovative rehabilitation nursing practice, education, research and advocacy.

My sense of responsibility, innovation and integrity holds me accountable for my behavior thus edging me up as a responsible nurse. This has allowed me to support the well-being of patients, their families and the whole community that I serve. Touching the lives of patients is an aspect that will enable me achieve my long-term and short-term goals and objectives. Negative stereotyping has influenced nursing as a career or as a vocation. As a result, nurses are not well treated or respected. Similarly, stress-associated problems such as having to work unpaid overtime and being expected to perform tasks outside the nurses’ training leads to considerable amounts of stress. To overcome the challenge, just as the mainstream would, I will preferably join private practice.
