Usually there are several strategies and mechanism that are designed and implemented by the teacher with an aim of motivating the students. Further more, there are several factors that influence student motivation in the classroom (Theobald 2006). Student motivation in actual sense deals with the students desire to participate actively in the learning process, in addition, it also concerns it with the goals or the reasons that underlie of their non involvement or involvement in the classroom. All students are equally motivated to do learn and do something constructive with their lives but the source of their motivation differs from one individual to another.
Therefore a student who is bascally motivated performs some tasks just for the sake of doing it. Intrinsic motivation more often than not leads to an increase in the effectiveness of learning and is more desired than extrinsic. In addition, it is highly recommended whenever one is teaching. It has been observed and noted that when a student is intrinsically motivated, he will implore strategies and means that need a lot of effort in processing of the information (Theobald 2006). Such students tend to prefer tasks that are not very challenging. On the other hand, extrinsically students do the direct opposite of an intrinsic student as they often tend to put forth little effort and energy in tasks that are less difficult.
In actual sense, it is not mandatory that each and every educational activitty will be intrinsically motivating. There are times when a student might exhibit minimal or no intrinsic motivation at all, thus extrinsic motivation comes in handy in such a situation.
It is a virtual fact that all children are born with a motivation and need to learn which might go down as it is growing up. This is because children are usually very curious and are often in dire need to explore and interact with the world around them. Analysts and observers say that learning in later years become drudgery instead of it being a delight (Theobald 2006). The decrease for motivation is due to one reason or another. The first reason is that of the design of the graded school where quizzes, exams and tests are administered. Secondly is the increase in the complexity of advanced learning that proves to be a challenge to most students. Last but not least is the chaotic society that distracts the student’s concentration especially the time and energy.
Motivation is very important in ensuring the success of the students. Be it intrinsic or extrinsic it is a vital aspect that can’t be ignored in a student’s life. Therefore, it is important for the teacher to administer and give motivation whenever possible.
