Criminal activities have become very common in every society. When crime happens, its effects touch almost everyone in a certain extent. The effects and costs incurred vary widely and are dependent on the nature of crime. Some of the criminal hazards include:
Theft is the act of taking someone’s property or money without the owner’s consent. The victim suffers the loss of the stolen property/ money. Theft has caused mistrust among members of a society. This makes them to live in fear of each other especially if they are strangers. Theft can be minimized by increasing security which includes using stronger locks, installing security alarms, recruiting more security personnel, and guard dogs. (Economic and Social Effects of Crime, 20004)
Terrorism is another criminal hazard and a major threat to many nations. The most common device used by terrorists is the explosive device which they use to attack public places such as political, financial, religious andsocial institutions. Thousands of people have lost their lives while others have been injured through acts of terrorism. Terrorist attacks have also caused untold damages to properties, widespread illnesses, economic loss, and displacement of people. To prevent terrorist attacks, governments should not interfere with other countries disputes. The general public should also report anything suspicious to the relevant authorities. People should refuse requests from strangers to carry parcels on their behalf. (Terrorism, 2007)
Assassination is the planned killing of a prominent person “who is not under the legal jurisdiction of the killer, who is not physically in the hands of the killer, who has been selected by a resistance organization for death, and whose death provides positive advantages to that organization” (Sokol, 2002). Assassinations, and attempted assassination, have occurred since time immemorial and has been a main feature of the political landscape. Assassination lead to losss of lives, intimidates people, and hinders their political advancement. Assassinations can be controlled by increasing the security of all the political leaders by ensuring that they have adequate bodyguards.
Drug abuse as a hazard refers to “the habitual use of licit or illicit drugs to the extent that it injures a person’s health or interferes with his or her social or economic functioning.” (Drug Abuse and Mental Illness).Drug abuse can cause many disorders and mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, manic depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, etc. Drug abuse affects the society in many ways. It causes inefficiency in workplace. Drug users are more likely to get involved in accidents, endangering themselves and those around them. Drug abuse can be prevented by creating awareness and educating people on the consequences of drug abuse. The addicts should be guided on how to drop the habit through regular counseling or through medical attention where necessary.
