Methods of transmitting tradition
Due to the undisputed importance of tradition, transmitting it from one generation to another has been deemed of paramount importance. It has been argued that human existence cannot be if tradition is not in existence. Broadly speaking, there are two main ways in which tradition are passed from one generation to another. These include traditional and modern methods. Among the traditional methods which do not necessarily need a writing system used in ancient time and event at present include mainly folklore (Candice & Walton, 2008). This entails music, proverbs, jokes, fairy tales, and oral history. Sub-categories of folklore that aid in transmitting tradition include the following; artifact which comprise of objects for instance dolls and other art materials, clothing, huts, sculptures among others.
Oral tradition which entails telling narrating has played a bigger role in passing values, customs, believes and customs from one generation to the subsequent ones. Additionally, practice of rituuals such as wedding, circumcision, baptism, harvest festivals to mention a few practiced with a set of human grouping do contribute to sharing of tradition from the present human generation to the next ones. Historically, speaking narratives were being told to those who were young in the society by their elders. This instill in these young individual wide set of knowledge (Candice & Walton, 2008).
The other method which has been in the forefront at the age of technological era is referred to as modern method. Mass media as well as print media have been incorporated in trying to transmit tradition (Candice & Walton, 2008). Videos, magazine, radio stations, televisions have been used to help pass rich cultural aspects of a given human community to their younger members.
Most government, especially in less developed countries has tried hard in passing legislations in order to support transmission of tradition. However, lack of other resources and money prove to be a hindrance in such quest.
From the review of Transmitting tradition, it is evident that there exists modification as we move from one generation to another. Similarly, the importance carried by the rich cultural customs warrants its transmission. Two main methods that aid in transmitting tradition are modern and traditional. It is worth noting that although we opt to cherish our past but we should not accept them to burden us in the future.
