It is definite that women have entered the work force with greater numbers, but many problems still exit. Women are still an oppressed group because they are treated as second-class citizens, viewed as sex objects, and mocked when they take on a "man's job".
Comparison in the statements
According to Alice traditionally the man is the breadwinner and the woman is the nurturer. The man is supposed to go out into the world and "work" while the woman stays home sheltered and takes care of the kids. According to him a women have always been looked down upon because raising kids was not seen as a "real" work. If one takes care of a baby, one will know that it is definitely "real" work, and a hard one at that. What could possibly be more important than socializing one's own kids? Aside from that, women have also taken care of all the housework. However, even housework has not been viewed as "real" work. So it is obvious that when a woman steps into the workplace; others ignorant to the tireless hours she's spent taking care of things at home, will look down on her. More than 50% of women at the workplace between ages 35-49 claim that they've been discriminated because of their gender. It's too bad men don't know how much work a woman has done and is capable of. She must therefore try even harder to gain the respect of the men around her. She has to show them that she can handle the job and that she will not crack under pressure. Seventy percent of Americans say men receive better treatment and earn more than women.
Alice stated that this is no surprise since women have a harder time getting jobs because of society's views. A woman must work harder, and sometimes go out of the line of duty to get what she wants. However, it does not end here; there are numerous other problems that women must deal with.
Alie added that one of the major problems is that men tend to view women as sex objects. Some even think that women are just here to fulfill a man's needs. This was how the majority viewed women in Victorian times. Although, less people think this way today, it is still a major set back for women.
Alice discussed that the more serious issues deal with physical sexual harassment. It is hard for a woman to be at ease when her male co-workers happen to rub up against her, or "accidentally" touch her breasts. This can lead to more serious problems such as rape which is the crime of forcing another person to submit to sex acts, especially intercourse. Women that are harassed have lower self-esteem and therefore cannot perform to their full potential. This makes it even harder for women to be assigned to higher positions. "Qui Pro Qu" is another form of sexual harassment. It basically means getting what one wants in exchange for sex. It is no wonder that there are more men in higher rank positions. If a man works hard and performs well, he will usually get the job. A woman however, must work hard, perform well, and deal with all of the problems that her male co-workers throw at her. A woman must not give in to fear. A woman must be strong and blunt about what she wants. She must ignore all of the discrimination or she won't be able to step up on the career ladder.
On the other hand Kingsley stated that the concept of 'social role theory', which proposes that "differences in attitudes could occur because of the different socialization experiences of males and females". Masculinity roles are formed through communal societal expectations about how an human being must behave and the characteristics they should possess. Kingsley revels that itt is definitely a long way to the top, but even when a woman reaches her desired position, the problems don't go away. Society has been socialized to believe that males are dominant while females are submissive. However Kingsley also said that if a woman gets a higher job in the workplace, a man must reject what society has told him. It is very hard for some men to accept taking orders from a woman. These men are used to being on top. These men have always been the dominant ones, but now things have changed and it's killing them. These bitter men will try to do many things to bring the female down from her position. Their actions may include not following instructions and giving the female leader a hard time. The female manager will be disrespected and treated harshly, and she is the only one that can save her self. She must once again prove to her male co-workers that she can get the job done. Achieving this will need very good leadership and interpersonal skills since the obstacles are higher, and the barriers are harder to leap over. It seems as though she has to hide her true personality and put up a front to deal with all that is coming her way. Everyday she must walk into the office and show everyone that she is ready and capable of handling a "man's job". Contrary to popular belief women have proved that they can do a "man's job". One of the biggest examples is World War 2. While all the men were out fighting the war, women took over all their jobs working long and hard hours to run the country. One of the main jobs that women took over was making weapons in factories, and undoubtedly, jobs don't get any "manlier" than that.
I like Alice statements the most as it is a truth that women are an oppressed group in the workforce because they are treated as second class citizens, sex objects, and ridiculed when taking a "man's job".
