The domination and achievement of women than men in enrollment and the completion in institutions of higher learning is a crucial topic to study for use to understand the potential consequences of this phenomenon to the family especially marriage, labor markets, politics among other issues The movement by women seeking for better opportunities for American girls has performed and achieved its goals as far as the attainment of the girl child is concerned. But this has according to Poe has come at a cost for the boys, who are no longer performing well in school. A few decades ago there was a huge educational gap between the boys and the girls. Very few girls compared to boys were able to achieve high education in institutions of higher learning in America. But due to the efforts and campaign by gender women the number of girls in the institutions of learning has grown to the point that girls are more than boys.

Today there are there has been a continued trend in America of the Young girls in America consistently outperforming their male peers during graduations in most high schools across America. Though there has been an increase in the proportion of both women and men who have been enrolling for college education, has been increasing from the 1970s, the increase in the number of women in the college enrollment has been very huge to even cause the girls to surpass the number of boys in colleges. This trend in the United States has brought about a reversal of the gender gap difference in the college completion which was once dominated by boys. In the 1960’s, over 65% of all the bachelor degrees were awarded to boys. But with aggressive efforts being employed the number of women slowly increased to reach parity with men and from 1982 onwards, they begun to be more female graduates than men.

The U.S. Department of Education predicted that the number of girls enrolling in colleges and competing will continue to increase therefore the gap between the male and female enrollment widens. The probability of an individual completing their college education is dependent of many factors, which include; an individual first completing high school, getting the correct timing in the transition to college, the college type that an individual is attending, and the course one is pursuing in college. Research has demonstrated that a lot of women are today benefitting more gain than men in the colleges due to a lot of factors.

In the America the completion of high school education marks that one can now access any form of postsecondary education that is available.  A huge number of youths are cancelled out from eligibility from accessing college because they did not complete their high school. The term dropout rate represents a percentage of young children from the age of 16 to the age of 24 year-olds that did not enroll in high school and did not earn a Certificate of General Educational Development (GED) or a high school diploma. The dropout rate of girls is lower compared to that of boys. In the early 90s, the male and female dropout rate was more as the same. But it later widened.

In 2005, about 11% of boys between the age of 16 to 24 had dropped out from school, yet 8% was of girls dropped out from school. The dropout rate also varies substantially on the various ethnic grouping in America, but the disadvantage by the boys is there in all the ethnic groups.  Also in the high school graduates, the number of males who acquire a GED are more than females, this indicates that there is a low level of preparedness in college than is the case for a high school diploma. Also the students who decide to immediately enroll into college after completion of their high school increase their rate of overall college persistence in college, enrollment, and later graduating from the college. In the past boys were more likely than girls to enroll for college education immediately they complete their high school, but with time the girls’ enrollment in colleges after completing their high school increased to a level of surpassing that of the boys. In 2000, about 60% of boys enrolled immediately after high school for college education this is lower compared to the 66% of girl who enrolled immediately.

While the American woman has made a lot of progress as far as education attainment and even surpassed men, they still dominate in the economic and political spheres in America. Statistics have shown that the women dominate in educational pursuit for a number of years but his has not contributed to real results. In 2000 in America the median income for women who possessed a high school diploma was $21,963, yet that of men with the same qualifications was $30,868, this is a huge difference. Women who held bachelor’s degrees in 2000 had a median earning of $35,408 and the men earned $49,982, which is another huge disparity (Neckerman, 154). The situation has not changed much since then. Is this what have made boy not to put a lot of emphasis on education since they will also perform well in life and earn good money irrespective of their levels of education?

There is a higher likely hood for women in America Women to poor than men.  There is about a big percentage of American households which have single females who live below the below the poverty line, but the households by men that live below the poverty line is very low. These can be attributed to the facts such as women in America are not exploring other job options that are open for them but are instead focused on the traditional female jobs, like administrative support and service occupations.

The American women constitute half of the U.S. population, but they are poorly represented in all levels of the American government and they are less than half of those in the government. For many years the participation by the American Woman in politics and in leadership of businesses has always been around 18%. Men in 2010 made up of 83% of the Congress, this means that the women have 17% representation this is lower than in other developed nations such as Sweden or the United Kingdom.

Due to a number of factors which are social, economical, and also to some extent historical, there has been a continued gender inequality in America and also around the world. In History, men have been entrenched as being the gender that is dominant for very many centuries. In America to achieve gender equality, education alone is not enough, but a lot needs to be done. Though the women have achieved in attaining good education, the women have not achieved much as far as equity in distribution of opportunities after education.
