Debates on the issue of organic vs industrial foods have become apparent all over the world for quite a long period of time. Different human societies have different thoughts and opinions concerning the issue. Organic foods, especially in developed countries, have been abandoned and there has been an increase in the consumption of industrial foods. Foods production in the most industrialized countries usually involves the use of fertilizers, pesticides and other scientific manipulations species. The use of fertilizers and pesticides has negative impacts on the basic health of human beings and animals consuming the food (Lawrence, Lyons & Wallington, 2010).

Generally, organic foods have been proven to be nutritionally healthier and even have a better taste in comparison to industrial foods. Most of industrial foods, for instance, poultry production are considered economically cheap both in production and in sales. Most producers (farmers) of industrial foods are, basically, profit oriented. They do not consider how the consumption of such foods could affect both human beings and animals.

Most people are not aware of the health hazards of most industrial foods and, therefore, prefer them more than the organic foods. There was a consumption of the foods which at the long run leads to complications such as obesity. Nowadays, industrial foods have become cheaper than organic foods due to their easy methods of production and their high growth rate.

United States is one the nations where a greater population has turned to consume industrial foods. Industrial food production is considered as a great success in combating food crisis. It has greatly cut the cost of production for the United States’ large population. Some of the benefits brought by the introduction of industrial foods include the availability of cheap food and increased exportation. In addition, it has brought a shift of employment from agriculture to more industrial production which is more profitable. The industrial foods have even been accorded the name “Sustainable Agriculture.” There have been a lot of controversial views on the increased consumption of industrial food. The big question is “are industrial foods the best solution to food crisis?”

On the other hand, organic foods are produced by methods that do not harm both animals and human beings. Their methods of production do not involve modern technologies such as the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers. In addition, they are not genetically manipulated by addition of food additives. For instance, livestock breed for organic consumption is not subjected to growth hormones and must be reared with uncontrolled access to pasture.

One major benefit of organic foods is the fact that they are free from genetic modification (GM).Genetic modification of foods has been found to result in unwanted traits of some food species. These unwanted traits pose risks to the health of consumers. Some genetic modification methods result in toxic materials in the species involved. This toxic material also poses danger to consumers and may result in various health complications. Organ foods rarely contain toxic substance because they grow in their natural environment, thus people who feed on organic materials are said to be much healthier than those consuming industrial foods.

In addition, organic foods are more nutritious than industrial foods since they are not subjected to manipulations through addition of substances such as fertilizers. They adapt to harsh environments by producing proteins and antioxidants which enhance the production of nutrients. On the other hand, animals’ body system adapts to harsh environments which result in production of vitamins and minerals for their survival. Also, being unrefined and fresh, the organic foods have a richer taste in comparison to industrial foods (Millstone & Lang, 2008).

Studies have shown that organically produced fruit and vegetables have significantly lower residue levels of pesticides compared to those that are industrially produced (Lawrence, Lyons & Wallington, 2010). They have no associated risks such as infertility and lower sperm counts, which have been found to be associated with industrial produced foods.

In conclusion, though cheap in production industrial foods have more harms than benefits. According to Organic Consumer Association, organic foods contain high levels of vitamins and cancer fighting antioxidants. Organic foods are estimated to be 25% more nutritious than industrial foods in terms of vitamins and minerals (Blay-Palmer, 2008). Though organic foods prices are about 20% higher than industrial foods, the industrial foods have hidden costs such as health damages. Also, organic farming allows soil to replenish, thus contributing vitamins and minerals to feed crops. In addition, methods and procedures in organic farming protect the structure and nutrients contained in soil, thus preserving its worth over time.
