Pets have been human’s companion since the beginning of life on planet earth and are still close to human beings in the present world. They are human’s favorite selected creatures from other wild animals and tamed for specific benefit. Pets are of different kinds and often brought up in different human environs (Grier, 2006). For instance, small pets such as cats and dogs live in-doors while some live out-doors. Pets have specific and special function in human life and are considered to be man’s best friend. They offer both adults and children physical and emotional support Puwankar, Holgate & Rossenwasser (2009) assert that pets can sometimes be affectionate to people and therefore caring for these pets becomes an expression of love that can help overcome one loneliness. Pets also build people’s self-esteem especially at old age where they teach people how build a good relationship with others by helping them socialize through communication. Similarly, pets enables people to develop into responsible persons owing to the fact that living with pests requires taking a personal initiative in ensuring that the pets are fed, nurtured and offered other services such as cleaning (Grier, 2006). There are various kinds of pets that man has managed to tame and raise within theirhome environment. This includes cats, dogs, birds, fish, and horse among others. Some families not only regard pets as a member of the family, but also as part and parcel of the family.
Some pets are not only excellent, but are also true companions in human life and are a sense of comfort to people who have lost their loved ones, they help those bereaved forget about their loss. Some people have also adopted living with pets at their work place, For instance, a dentist keeping a fish aquarium in his/her office. There are many reasons why people live with pets some of which include for fascination, beauty, behavior and nature. For instance, some pets such as birds have stunning sounds which serves as delight to the owners. Similarly, pets can be used for security purposes owing to the fact that they have strong instincts which allow them to differentiate between their owners and strangers thereby relaying any perceived danger.
Nevertheless, most pets are harmless especially to children and often offer companion in form of playmates to both adults and children. Through this, pets offer entertainment and relieve especially in cases where one is depressed. Pets have also been cited improve people’s health. Studies show that people living with ppets are less prone to various diseases such as blood pressure, headaches, fever, high cholesterol level, and kidney problems. Starkey & Starkey International (2008), assert that pets also improve people’s health by offering assistants for exercise and can also be trained to guide the blind in the streets and while crossing the road.
Although domesticated animals have become man’s best friend, pets have different behavior and therefore need to be trained by their owners and be given special attention such as medical care and special food (Starkey & Starkey International, 2008). This implies that living with pets is so demanding to human beings owing to the special needs that they should be accorded. The other disadvantage of living with pets might include diseases and allergies resulting from pets’ fur such as cats and dogs that activates asthma. Pawankar et al(2009), assert that almost one-tenth of the population at some point was forced to get rid of their pests because of allergy it caused to humans.
In summary, living with pets has both its advantages and disadvantages. This calls for an individual to be prepared effectively before taking a step to live with a pest. It should not just be seen from the advantageous point of view.
