Politics implies ensuring prosperity, happy and peaceful life of the people. There are several versions and definitions of politics. Nevertheless, the ancient and quite unique definitions of politics had been presented by the philosophers in very old days. In fact, philosophy is a totally different domain from political science. But, indeed, some philosophers had defined it quite clearly as well as in an influential manner.
A scholarly personality possesses philosophical and logical approach traits that distinguish him/her from others. Moreover, scholars quite particularly articulate and put the thought into new directions and in addition, they deliberately discuss the humanistic and universal secrets to a certain extent. However, certainly, for a common man it is not an easy task to articulate rules and directions of social as well as non social life. Nevertheless, a scholarly person can do it very easily.
It is a matter of fact that the wisdom of scholars cannot be restricted. Hence, scholars possess wisdom of earth as well as universe. It gifts them special knacks to define philosophically the world order as well as universe order. However, for that a scholar should have special thought process and insightful observation about life, universe, and about surroundings to understand and utter. Hereinafter, it would not be wrong to say that scholars possess some special and God gifted personality traits.
There are several scholars from which some are ancient and some are presented. Nevertheless, from several scholars there are two very old, but at the same time very commanding scholars in the field of logic, politics, happiness, and community approach - Aristotle and Plato. Even though they had command of several subjects, their political approaches to humanistic matters are quite unique. They also possess independent approach status due to their strong philosophical viewpoint.
Aristotle was an ancient Greek philosopher. He was a student of Plato and a teacher of Alexander the Great. He possesses profound status in the list of scholars, and it is still sustained even in the current modern and scientific era. Aristotle’s father was a physician, but, he did not possess any interest in medicine like his father. Therefore, in 367 B.C Aristotle joined Plato’s academy in Athens at the age of 17 years. He quite profoundly spent his early age in the development of professional knacks. His rage of wisdom is quite large, that is why he quite authoritatively wrote on different subjects like logic, rhetoric, politics, government, ethics, biology, metaphysics, poetry, theater, music, zoology and physics.
Moreover, Aristotle’s diverse personality allowed him to put a figure on almost all scholarly subjects and he did it in a decent manner. However, a dilemmatic fact is, even Aristotle wrote many elegant theories, treatise, and dialogues. But, many of them have been lost. And very little, about one-third of the original works have survived. This is an unfair treatment with the thought-provoking scholarly collection of legendary scholar Aristotle. However, his hard work and devotion in not only one but many scholarly fields can never be forbidden forever (Shields).
Philosophy of practical was presented by Aristotle with its true essence. All his scholarly work is completely implemental due to its practical approach. Even his practical philosophy provided prominence to him in his work and practical life. His philosophy of practical approach towards every event and every happening of life reflects through his personality. He was not only a logician, philosopher, mathematician but also a decent and sympathetic human being that reflected in his political theories as well. His writing proofed his humanistic approach towards politics.
Aristotle’s approach towards ethics is purely a practical approach. He categorically rejected the concept of ethics as a theoretical study. Therefore, he strongly propagated his concept of ethics through his writings and its practical application into the political process and events. From which his treatise “Nicomachean Ethics” achieved great success and consideration. He describes the ethics in reference of character and habits. Moreover, his theory of ethics covers the theory of humanism quite well.
In his ethics philosophy he referred to the single individuals. Nevertheless, in the politics of a philosophical approach he portrayed the concept of a community. The meaning of his approach and philosophy is about cities, a combined living as a community. He was the first and his theory was the first conceived sketch of city and city life. Moreover, his theory consists in the togetherness and a collection of parts which cannot exist without each other (Knight)
Plato is another great name in the history of philosophy . Plato possesses the ultimate knacks of classical Greek philosophy and mathematics. He retains the pride of founding the first higher learning institution in the west. Most of his writings are based on the dialogues that have a wide range of subjects like philosophy, logic, ethics, rhetoric, and mathematics. He created a chain of knowledge in the version of his students and the most prominent example of it is Aristotle.
He is widely considered the first mouth of talking about the politics in the reference of justice. It is an obvious fact that in the process of his educational activity, he induced this notion into his students to enhance the wisdom of justice and ethics in politics. Aristotle’s idea of cities and community is actually extension of Plato’s viewpoint of republi, and justice. Plato quite extensively elaborated his idea of politics in his philosophy of republic. And he categorically influenced the idea of justice in the republic (Kraut).
Plato is one of those philosophers who possess gigantic wisdom. From many others his philosophy of the republic and the add-on to his political concepts has been considered as one of the oldest and the most influential political philosophies. Therefore, his just man and unjust man philosophy has lots to address the overall scenario of a republic/government. And, in addition, the theory of form presented by him possesses an absolute resolving approach to solve the problem faced by a citizen of a republic.
Hence, it is a matter of fact that individual happiness and justice is actually essence of Plato’s political approach. He presented the version of ethical politics to get the peace prosperity and progress in the society. At the same time, his wisdom of a second parallel world in his theory of form tints out the ethical approach in the politicians. That is why he has been always known as a humanistic personality and insightful scholar.
Hannah Arendt is neither ancient nor philosopher. But, she has been called a philosopher by a large amount of people. However, she herself denied that fact. Her blend of ancient, old and current political, public and social theories provide comprehensive wisdom to understand the overall human life and its political scenario.
Her most influential and always remembered work is “The Human Condition.” In that work she authoritatively discussed the domains of a human being either it is male or female. Moreover, she conducted a comparative study of overall human life i.e. political, social, and private and explored the various forms of actions in it. And, at the same time, its connection with the ancient societies as well as its prevalence in the current societies has been discussed with wisdom (Yar).
The concept of public and the private realm presented by Hannah Arendt separates two identical life styles. She refers to the notion of two identical life styles of ancient polis life. The concept of public realm was taken from the Aristotle viewpoint which he expressed in his writings. Hannah Arendt mentioned this extraction of idea of Aristotle in her book “The Human Condition” quite frequently.
The private realm was expressed by her in the context of private, home, domestic or household’s life. Therefore, she separated the life into two realms, the public realm denotes to the political, state, city or republic life. Conversely the private realm denotes to the family, comfort, individual, and the domestic life identity (Arendt page number).
Two very renowned philosophers Aristotle and Plato, and one prominent political theorist Hannah Arendt have same notion about politics. In fact, Hannah Arendt is not a philosopher, but majority has knighted her philosopher, however she denied that categorically. Nevertheless, in a general comparison, Arendt possesses the same ideas and the wisdom about politics which the two renowned philosophers Aristotle and Plato have.
Hence, the concept of cities presented by Aristotle in his philosophical wisdom, the concept of republic presented by Plato in his philosophical wisdom, and the concept of public and private realm presented in Hannah Arendt political wisdom have the same meaning and the same influence. Whereas Aristotle and Plato directly denoted the politics by referring it to the cities and republic activities, Hannah Arendt indirectly denoted the politics by referring it to the public realm. But, meaning in each one’s theory or philosophy is the same to identify the political or public oriented activities and to make them more centers oriented.
Outstanding ideas of politics in philosophical wisdom are presented by three most prominent personalities in the field of political studies Aristotle, Plato, and Hannah Arendt. It is time to express personal ideas on the politics and government. It will be a personal argument by keeping in view the established theories and philosophies.
In a democratic society the ideal government refers to the government of the people, by the people, and for the people. The democratic characterization of government would be the idea of three prominent philosophers; the good government could also be built on the same characterization.
Therefore, people are a core of government because people make the governments by participating in political process. And, people in the government are actually those people who participated to form a government. The concept of a democratic government also refers to the notion of Aristotle’s scholarly approach of cities or community, Plato’s approach of republic, and Hannah Arendt’s concept of public and private realm.
Therefore, altogether, government is a conception of a public or a community and its activities are based on public and community. The formation of government and its functions are governed by the public and the community. So, it is an activity of public realm to build good community, republic or government for the people, it should be formed of the people, and it has to be formed by the people.
By examining tthree afore-mentioned scholars, it has been established that each of them believes in the happiness of individual members of the community.
Aristotle defined the happiness in his cities and community. He was the fist who presented community in a living approach, and induced the ethics into the political practices. His theory consists in the togetherness and a collection of parts which cannot exist without each other.
Plato defined the happiness in his republic. His just man and unjust man theory presented the law, rules and justice in the political system as well as political practices. At the same time, his wisdom of a second parallel world in his theory that was ahead strengthened the ethical approach in the political process.
Hannah Arendt defined the politics and political process in her “public and the private realm”. She segregated the two life styles. One she suggested was public and the second she suggested was private. She further defined the prerequisites of both of the life styles and presented in her book another “social realm.” Therefore, her theories are actually based on the real life practices i.e. the public and the private.
So, all three of them actually have unanimous approach towards the happiness of individual members of the community.. In fact, the current political system as well as the environment we have for politics. reflect the main idea of three scholars – the happiness of community members.
Are citizens happier if they live under good laws and good administration?
It is a basic human right to live under good laws and good administration. In overall overview one can understand that in a society some citizens have strong social standing and some have weak. Therefore, it is so important to have equal laws and administration for every citizen and provide equal rights for everyone. Moreover, in a humanistic approach the equal good approach towards the basic human rights makes the citizens happier, it is for sure.
The essence of this essay is also about happiness of citizens for having good laws and good administration around them. Three scholars Aristotle, Plato, and Hannah Arindt discussed above have the same sentiments and theory for citizens to be happier by giving them the good laws and good administration. Indeed, it could be notified by getting impression of the civilized world.
Why would justice be something I would want, as an individual and as a member of community?
Justice is something that balances the society. Without justice a nation cannot achieve the status of a civilized nation. And, without civilization no society can be treated as a community. Therefore, justice is deemed the basis of achieving the status of a civilized nation. For a. member of community and for the whole community justice is something that gives social, political and the domestic/in house equality.
Therefore, justice is an utmost and ultimate requirement of a stable and lawful government. No government can run its system and procedures in a proper manner without justice. Plato has presented very good notion of just and unjust man in his theory of politics. He justified the importance of justice and denied the unjust prevalence in the society. On the other hand, Aristotle has add-on ethics in his politics theory that also means the justice and respect in the system and process of politics. So, justice is basic to achieve a status of a civilized nation.
I personally believe that a good city concept presented in the theories of above-mentioned scholars is critically important to individual happiness. The reason behind my opinion is a cooperative community; it is a guarantee of communal happiness to the individual. There are several examples of united individuals and independent individuals. The outcome civilizations get from these experiences is the united individuals or the community system, which is much better for the independent individuals.
It should be mentioned that the concept of a good city also refers to the notion of united individuals or the community. And, it is a proved fact that united individuals i.e. a good city is necessary for the individual happiness. It not only assures the ethical behavior of the society but it also insures peace and justice. At the same time, it also develops the public realm that is defined by Hannah Arendt in her book “The Human Condition.”
At the end of treatise, it is better to restate the thesis which is, politics implies ensuring prosperity, happy and peaceful life of the people. At the end, after examination of the idea of politics of three well established political scholars as well as understanding the political ideals of Aristotle and Plato it is now easy to comment that individual ethics, happiness and justice are most essential constituents in the political process and in the city/community. Hence, without these three elements of fine politics and good government, a status of a good community or a civilized nation cannot be achieved.
Furthermore, it is mandatory to have and understand the most prominent ideas of the best scholars to achieve the best outcome from politics and the government. It will be not only influential in the term of humanistic approach, but it will also be helpful for overall community prosperity, happiness and peaceful life.
