Advances in technology have been considered to minimize on time and energy use to perform a task. This has let to its introduction in almost every sector of people life. Even though I agree with its use in the banking, communication and higher education sector, I don’t see it to be appropriate for junior students (White, 1983). Over reliance on technology has made people loose their innovative ability as they search for faster solutions on the computer. Most of the mature adults that are currently appreciating technology did not have the opportunity to apply the same when they were in their junior stages. They had to do all their assignments manually which was a good determinant of their progress. Some educational institutions have designed computer programs that they say are convenient to the junior students. Technological companies have gone ahead to introduce computer devices that they deem to be good for the children. Without realizing it, the introduction of such programs are slowly draining the future generation an opportunity to use their hands and minds to reason and work out problems.
This they say will ease learning and enable the children to learn a lot when they are still young (Smith & Pellegrini, 2000). For sure, I believe that there must be some efforts applied towards the efforts of learning for the concerned students to appreciate and value education. Why should learning be made easier, when it is the very procedure that helps children to grow? The situation is so bad that some children don’t know how to play. They only know how to move the mouse and hence playing computer related games. This basically shows that the society has forgotten the very purpose why play is important for kids. They consider intellectual maturity to be more important than physical and psychological maturity. The reason why we are bracing ourselves for an antisocial community is because of technology. Technology assures us that we can still communicate and network with people around the world without necessarily physical contacts (Khosrowpour, 2003). By denying the children an opportunity for outdoor games, we are simply denying them the opportunity to interact with their fellow children.
It is also through play that parents get to interact with their neighbors. The freedom that the children have as they relate with each other unites people in the neighborhoods who mainly do it for the sake of their children. However technology is is denying the community such reconciliation opportunities by making their children not to know the child next door. Children are punished by making them sit before a computer screen which may ultimately turn their brains into computer programs. The basis that differentiates a computer from a human being is the ability to reason and make adjustments. This can only be birthed by their physical exposure to real issues which computers are not exposed to. However, by making a child to be acquainted with the computer at a very young stage, then they will adapt the reasoning of the computer. They will not be able to effectively handle the real issues of life which the computer cannot provide a solution to. The worst of all this is that computer age children may not know how to use a pen (Mendoza, 1998). This basically means that their handwritings are wanting. They are only used to typing letters on the keyboard. Not allowing computers in junior schools will be the best sacrifice we can make for our future generation.
