Morals among people in the society are some of the important issues which are esteemed for a mutual or rather cohesive existence of human beings. In consistent with this, different societies across the globe have developed their moral system which acts as important guides towards shaping the behavior of people within their societies. In this regard, there are some of the issues which are perceived as lack of morality in one part, yet when the same issues are judged by moral standards of other people in another part of the globe, these issues does not violate any moral standards.
To begin with, it is important to understand that different people have different morals which dictate the perception of these people towards certain issues in the society. Following this point, people from different parts of the globe have been found to elicit varying behavior and perception towards certain elements in a particular environment. Essentially, the development of morals among different people is shaped by their cultural backgrounds and gender. In reference to Damon, both culture and gender are variations that shape children’s social experience in ways that influence their moral values. Westermarck (2000) argues that there no objective standards of morality and that since truth is one, it has to be the same for any one who knows it, and if morality is a matter of truth and falsity, in the normative sense of the terms, the same must be the case for moral truth (p.183). However, it is important to understand that there are two sides of argument to the above point that if morality is a matter of truth and falsity, moral truth is universal. To begin with, different societies have different morals. In this regard, there are issues which according to them, they are very true. However, to the other society dictated by different morality, this may be totally different. Beehler & Drengson (1978) reiterates that each society, each generation within it, and, in the last resort, each reflective individual, accepts and amends and established morality expressed in rituals and manners, and in explicit prohibitations; and an individual will do this in determining what kind of person he aspires to be and what are the necessary features of a desirable and admirable way of life as he conceives it (p.49).
On the other hand, the issue of universal truth could easily be dismissed. It is important to note that some of the truths which have been held by some societies concerning their moral beliefs are misguided and only achieve a task of violating human right rather than promoting the cohesiveness that is needed for a harmonious societal existence. For instance, those societies which practiced female genital mutilation believed that by doing so, they were ushering their women into maturity, as well as prepare them to begin their own families. However, this was not the case and instead the rights of these women were violated. In this regard, there is no truth in this fact since there is no single evidence which indicates that women who are yet to pass through the rite of female genital mutilation are immature.
As mentioned earlier, the instilling of morals in the society was found to assists the society or rather individuals in the society to live with one another in harmony, no matter the kind of morals which were upheld by a particular society. In consistent with this, moral in different societies across the globe were meant to protect the society and the life that existed in this society. According to Beehler & Drengson (1978), if the prohibitations which existed in different societies, whatever they are, were brought to a halt and no longer observed, and the particular life that depended on them was lost, and not just amended or replaced, there would be no particular reason which would then be left to protect human life more than any other natural phenomenon (p.49). Apparently, the protection of human life depended heavily on the existence of moral structures, regardless of whether these morals were acceptable across the globe or not.
However, some of the morals in some of the societies across the globe have been found to violate the human rights of either every individual in these societies of a section of individuals. In this respect, the morals of these societies propagate moral issues which violate the rights of individuals within their boundaries. For instance, it was been noted some societies across the globe practiced female genital mutilation. Therefore, their morals dictated that for a woman to be accepted by the whole society as mature and therefore allowed to even engage in forming her own family ties, one had to allow part of her sexual organ, i.e. the clitoris to be removed. In this way, such a woman was then allowed to earn the respect from the rest of the society. The formation of morals was also found to be influenced by morals and vice versa. In consistent with this, there are different religious issues which dictated how people behaved morally in the society. For instance, maintenance of sexual purity among the young people in the society was found to have been influenced greatly by the religious background of such youths. Notably, some religions across the globe barred people from engaging in sexual activities with partners whom they were not married to. Therefore, through such religious teaching, the people involved able to uphold the moral standards by avoiding such cases of sexual involvement. Therefore, the existence of religion has continued to play a critical role in enhancing the morals of different people across the globe. In summation, different societies across the globe have different morality standards which are meant to protect life in the societies as well as promote a harmonious existence of individuals in these societies. Notably, the environment in which a child is raised in and the gender of the child as well as religion were among the important issues which shaped the development of morals in a person. This therefore means that different people had totally different moral values which they expressed in the society. On the other hand, there were issues which raised moral contentions in the society as a result of the fact that whereas one society upheld them, the other on abhorred such morals. This has continued to raise conflicts, especially in trying to harmonize moral standards across the globe. The influence of religion by morals in different societies was also evident in the researches and studies which were carried out on the issue of religion and morals.
