This is an essay on two sports personalities. The essay will analyze the life and times of Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aviero as compared and contrasted to that of David Robert Joseph Beckham.
Both Cristiano and Beckham are sports personalities in the world of soccer. Both had the love of football since their childhood years; Beckham wanted to be a football player for Manchester united while; Cristiano developed his love of the sport at the age of three when he began casually kicking the ball around on the dusty back-streets. In both cases, their parents inspired them into the beautiful game; Beckham was encouraged by his father Ted who was also a Manchester united supporter while Cristiano’s father was the team equipment manager of Andorinha where Cristiano started his career. Both were scouted for into the world of soccer; at 11, Beckham was scouted into Bobby Charlton Soccer Schools where he got a chance to train at Fc Barcelona. He was later scouted by a Manchester United scout and given a trial at the club. Cristiano was scouted for at the age of 10 by top teams; Maritimo and Nacional. He joined Nacional and after a successful season at the club, he was sent for trials to Sporting Risbon. Both personalities ended up joining Manchester United as professional players with Beckham signing as a professional in 1993 while Cristiano signed for Manchester United in 2003 as a long term project to replace Beckham.
Both were successful in Manchester united: Beckham was in the team that won the FA youth cup in 1992, he won the premiership and FA cup double of the 1995/1996 season with Manchester, he was very influential in Manchester’s treble win of the premier League, FA cup and champions league in 1998-1999 season, he wore the great no.7 shirt of Manchester united and played a total of 311 games scoring 74 goals for the club. Cristiano was also given the great shirt number 7 in Manchester, he scored United’s 1000th goal on 29 October 2005, he won the Premier League with the club in 2007,2008 and 2009 seasons, he won the champions league with Manchester in the 2007-2008 season, he participated in the second consecutive Champions League final in 2008-2009 season where Manchester lost, he scored against all the 19 English Premier League teams, he was in the team that won Club World Cup on 19 December 2008 , in March 2007 he became the highest- paid player in team history, he played 292 matches and scored 118 goals for Manchester united. Both players later moved to Real Madrid: Beckham joined Madrid in 2003 while Cristiano joined in 2009. Both players have captained their national teams: Beckham captained England from 2000 to 2006 while Cristiano has captained Portugal since 2008(The Internet Movie Database, 2010 pg 1); (Buzzle.com, 2010 pg 1).
Beckham was born on 2 May 1975 in London while Cristiano was born on 5 February 1985 in Portugal. Beckham’s stay in Manchester United was filled with love by the fans while Cristiano’s stay in Manchester was filled with mixed feelings; after the 2006 World cup finals where Cristiano was quoted as having influenced the referee to give Rooney a red card during the quarter-final match between England and Portugal, Cristiano was at crossroads with England fans (including Manchester fans) for a long time. Unlike Cristiano whose success is more on the soccer field, Beckham has earned much through fashion and advertisements. Cristiano’s social life has been private; he fathered a son this year with an undisclosed woman. However, Beckham’s social life is public; he married a spice girl, Victoria and featuring in fashion shows. Conclusively, Beckham was wearing jersey number 23 while Cristiano wears jersey number 9 at Real Madrid (The Internet Movie Database, 2010 pg 1; Buzzle, 2010 pg 1).
