Being the headquarters of The United Nations, New York is an essential center for international affairs and seen by many as the cultural capital of the entire world. The city is commonly referred to as New York City in order to distinguish it from the state of New York, to which it belongs. The city is strategically situated on one of the World’s largest natural harbors and it consists of five major regions which were consolidated in the year 1898. They include Staten Island, The Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan. The city is the most densely populated major American city boosting of people from diverse ethnic backgrounds depicted by the more than 800 languages spoken in the city. New York City traces its roots back in the 16th century where it was founded as a trading center by colonists of the Dutch Republic. It has been the United States largest city since 1790 having served as capital between 1785 and 1790. The present day New York City was occupied by many Algonquian tribes of indigenous Americas. Members of the Wappinger Confederation, The Weckquaesgeek, occupied the present day Bronx and the northern part of Manhattan. While the Rock way sub tribe occupied the present day Queens. The 16th century saw the founding of New Amsterdam, a Dutch trading settlement on the southern part of Manhattan. The city starts to take form as New Amsterdam is transformed to British New York. The city becomes a region for several key battles through the revolutionary war. New York City grew significance under the British rule as a main trading port. It hosted the famous trial of Zenger Peter in 1735 which aided in establishing the freedom of press in N. America. Columbia University is one of the city’s oldest institutions of higher learning having been founded by George the second of Britain in 1754. Numerous colleges and Universities have since been developed in the city including New York University and Rockefeller University.

Being home to the largest port in The United States, New York city experiences a wave of huge immigrants influx led by German and Irish immigrants between 1825 and 1865. However, they come to realize that the city is not so welcoming to immigrants. Calvert Vaux and Olmstead Fredrick transform the city with their design for Central Park. Social instability is seen to run high among the working classes climaxing with the 1863 draft riots. The Gilded period after the civil war experienced the rise the negative side of New York where robber barons thrived and the gap between the rich and the poor widened considerably. The political class was not spared either, illustrated by Hall Tammany and Tweed William whom descended into absolute corruption. As the city starts growing tremendously and construction of the skyscrapers that defined the cities iconic skyline, millions of immigrants arrive in New York. Most of the immigrants lived in squalid conditions and worked in the most detrimental jobs in the city.
