The twentieth century will remain in the minds of people as one of the periods that had tremendous changes especially in terms of technology. Globalization and in this regard the increase in interaction of people through trade has continued to be enhanced by the evolving technology such as the internet. As a matter of fact, the internet has made it easier for people from different parts of the globe to interact freely without really having to move out of their homes. One of issues that the internet has contributed in the global society is social networking or rather social interaction. In spite of the fact that the internet has enhanced the lives of people across the globe, it has also contributed to different challenges across the globe.
Social networking sites have been adopted by people across the world as one of the tools of reaching out to their friends and finding new friends. In this regard, there are issues that raise concerns on the advantages of social networks in enhancing the lives of people globally. Whereas these networks have been utilized in the past as a way of finding both lost friends and new friends, and obtaining updated information on the whereabouts and the progress in their lives, it has also been seen as a threat to people’s privacy across the globe (Clemmitt 630). In respect to this, the users of social networks risks loosing their identity or rather important information that concerns their private lives. For instance, a criminal can be able to trace a person from one town to the other based on the information that is posted on these sites by a person. On the other hand, there are people who have been patient enough to befriend people they meet on social networks, obtain their private information and then use it for fraudulent purposes.
In line with this, social networks are arguably the best places where a person can be able to interact with people from all walks of life. However, this is to the backdrop of the fact that when one joins a social networking site, he or she risks being lured into the hand of a wrong person in terms of character and other antisocial behaviors that are depicted in the society. In this regard, it is very difficult for social network systems to ascertain the credibility of the information that is posted by a person in regard to his life, age, names and other important issues that are considered critical in analyzing a person (Clemmitt 633). As a result, young adolescents, who are below 17 years have subscribed to these sites only to be lured into sexual traps by sexual predators. For instance, Clemmitt (2006) argues that a 14 year old was lured into a sexual trap by a 19 year old adult and molested (627). This led to her mother suing myspace.com for $30 million since this man had met her daughter on this site (627). This does not factor out numerous cases of people who have lost their money through fake investment schemes that were advertised by some of the users of social networking sites.

In consistent with this, social networking sites can act as an excellent channel of exchanging information among different individual across the globe. However, it is important for one to note that some of the information that is shared on these sites is not beneficial to the growth of the society. Instead, it was found that some of the information posted by users of these sites contributed to negative behaviors in the society (Clemmitt 631). This does not mean that these sites have ignored security measures to filter information that is shared among their users. Instead, these security measures are in some cases unable to meet the overwhelming challenges that have emerged from the fact that some message codes that are used by users cannot be detected by the security systems of these sites. With respect to this, many people who have been introduced to negative social vices such as homosexuality and pornography through these sites (631).
There are several ways through which this is done. First, social network predators have focused on identifying their victims, forming friendship and then slowly moving them away from their moral standards by introducing them to mild forms of these vices. As time goes by, one is completely entangled in these vices and can no longer get out (Clemmitt 632). On the other hand, these predators have found a way of phishing their victims from the main social network sites and introducing them to their own sites that promote negative vices in the society. Whereas both methods have affected a lot of social network users, the first method is more dangerous as a few people are able to detect the intentions of these predators and therefore fall into their traps without knowing (636).
It can therefore be argued that social networking sites have increased the interaction of people from different cultural backgrounds across the globe. This has enhanced sharing of different ideas on different issues that concerns the society in general. However, there have been concerns in regard to the negative use of these sites by people with malicious intentions. There are a lot of people that have been lured into traps by predators who pose as good people on these sites only to turn out to be either criminals or internet predators that are out to destroy people’s lives. In addition, these sites have been found to compromise on the privacy standards of people, with a lot of people losing their privacy due to the information they share on these sites.
