The Gothic movement in architecture in Western Europe was started by French Abbot Suger at the cathedral of Saint Denis. The name of the Cathedral, Denis, was the namesake to Dionysius', a believer who Christianized France. Suger wanted to expand on his hypothesis on God as the paranormal light changing everything substantial into immateriality. This approach motivates his mission to lifting a novel ambulatory of the Cathedral of Saint Denis (Sacred destinations 2006). Another reason for the gothic architecture was a spur from the late Romanesque structural design of Normandy (Caen).

Gothic movement in architecture

Gothic architects began applying corrugated vaulting, and stylish arches decisively to pressure light and overhead spaces. By late 1200s, Rayonnant architectural style developed into a showy style with a multitude of apexes, and other enhancing structures. Central Europe, the small states Spain and Italy saw the resolution of large populations of people at centers that were created by gothic architects. Therefore, urbanization was largely brought about by tourist attractions with the purpose of getting a sense of the widespread gothic architecture (Helfrich 2002).

Building on economic strength, trade was enhanced by different rulers who evolved complete bureaucracies. These systems of government were driven by the trade of materials that were needed for the construction of gothic buildings (Sacred destinations 2006). Since territorial expansion called for an increase in the number of traders selling equipment required for the construction of gothic structures, thus trade was enhanced. Henry’s commitment to St Edward later on prompted the construction of a new church in a gothic style to accommodate new people looking to a way of living. As a result, different occupations were created under the cathedral building.

The theology of the time was expressed in medieval cathedral in the form of religious life. Religion from the medieval west majorly attributed to the medieval monasticism that developed a theology into a modern culture (Metropolitan museum of art 2010). Theologians determined the cost of the cathedral through the measurement of the apexes, arches, stories and style used. The cost was justified by the height of the walls and structures that made up the building.

Some area dwellers did not like the idea of the cathedral building in the region of residence and opposed church leaders towards the construction of a cathedral (Helfrich 2002). Architect Klauder also opposed the construction of the Cathedral because the cost of construction was too high. Cathedral churches’ architectural designs and buildings notify us that the medieval life was profoundly influenced by creative innovations arising from religious and spiritual visualizations The (Metropolitan museum of art 2010).
