The pilot program was conducted by researchers to involve the youth in the campaign against drug abuse and dealing. The participants were recruited from schools and the neighbourhood hang out places fro those who did not attend school. The participants were to come up with a design on how the campaign would be conducted through discussion and participation in the program. This paper focuses on the problems encountered during the program research period and how the researchers addressed the same.

In the recruitment process, the staff/teachers identified students for the program (Swaner & White, 2009, 10). This is not good interference because the best mode of recruitment should be random for interested candidates. The teachers identified well –connected and smart youth for participation. These resulted in a part of the participants not being interested during the program. The recruitment process did not put into consideration the ability of the youth to comprehend the program due to disabilities and maturity level as well as cognitive development. This posed a problem where the youth could not comprehend the material of discussion. To deal with this issue, the researchers introduced a two round interview process so that the participants could understand that commitment and active participation was required. They revised the interview structure to allow the staff to determine which youth participants were interested in talking about social issues and who were not capable of carrying on such discussions. This measure is effective because it eliminates participants who may be uninterested or lack the ability to contribute actively to the program. This ensures that the information and the results reflect the true feeling of the participants towards the topic of discussion.

The researchers encountered the problem of the program being too long to run through summer period (Swaner & White, 2009, 11). Ethical issues such as lateness and absence were also prevalent in the program. The youth were mostly absent because they needed to get summer jobs which took the whole day until 4 or 5p.m in the evening. To accommodate youth who travelled long distances, the commencement time was moved hour an hour late. This enabled all youth participants to get there by 4.30p.m. All youth who arrived later than these were considered late and didn’t receive a payment for the day. This stiffer penalty for lateness encouraged all youth to arrive on time. The penalty was also enacted for absentees from the program without a legitimate reason.  The program time was also changed from March to October so that it could align with the school year. This reduced the problem of youth having to dodge between a summer job and the program. The researchers’ way of dealing with these problems was effective and enforceable. The solutions also tackled the problems directly and provided a consequence to the issues if they persisted. The motivation policy implemented to make the solutions effective included change of time and fiscal motivation.

The participants were not connecting the importance of the program to the topics and issues affecting the society that were discussed (Swaner & White, 2009, 11). This is because the procedure of tackling the main agenda of the program was not effective. The researchers kept the marketing topics for the end of the program while they started with discussion of issues affecting the society. As a result, the participants didn’t know how to use the information or knowledge acquired and how to relay it to the society. This is because they did not have enough time to understand the marketing or communication procedures or processes before application. This was a problem developed by the researchers’ failure to plan and understand how the participants assimilated the information passed on to them. The researchers addressed the issue by changing the procedure of training the youth. The youth were first taught on listening, teamwork, and leadership and communication skills before embarking on major discussions. This would help them relate the issues affecting the society and allow them to formulate a process on how to relay the information to the society. The procedure would also help them to be actively involved in the discussion by making them feel at home when dealing with their peers thus fostering team building. The procedure was also aimed at educating the youth on communication thus boosting their confidence while implementing the program. The remedies for this problem was effective and provided a better procedure where the youth wee educated first before being asked to contribute towards the discussions of the program. This would even save time for the program by eliminating question related to the application of the program. The procedure allowed the youth to be able to plan their campaigns and get acquitted with the people they would work with in the program implementation thus making the program more effective.

The inclusion of known marijuana users in a campaign against drug use was a problem in that it could make the research to lose credibility among the target group (Swaner & White, 2009, 4). The researchers had to turn a blind eye towards such participants and doctored their research focus to dealing other than using of drugs so as not to victimize the participants who used the drug. Thee researcher s could have addressed the issue with their participants before making them delegates of campaign against drug abuse. Though the participants did not perceive this a potential problem, the results must have been affected by the drug abusers being tin the program. This is because the school going youth and the drug using youth cannot function as a team in any society. This shows that most youth were there because they needed to feel they were working other than to assimilate the program and use the knowledge to help the society starting with themselves. The researchers’ manner of dealing with the issue of drug abusers in the program was not sufficient or effective. The researchers failed to see the overall good it would do the program m to educate the participants on drug use other than to shift the focus to drug peddling. This is because either peddling or using, the common term is drug abuse. This would elicit political problems where some parents or ht society may be against their children/youth being led in campaign against drug abuse by drug abusers.

The information provided by the participants was not verified or sincere. This is because the researchers did not take their time to get acquitted with the participants before the program started. The participants simply gave answers that they thought researchers wanted to hear and those that would no get them into trouble with their elders in the society (Swaner & White, 2009, 6). This is shown by the fact that, the expected results for pre and post program were not achieved for some questions. For instance, the participants thought that use of drugs was not a serious offence after the program as compared to their thoughts before the program. This insincerity may have affected the recommendations made by the researchers or prompted another research of finding out why the expected results were not forthcoming b the researchers. A preliminary visit to the target society by researchers was necessary so as to establish a relationship that fostered sincerity between them and the participants. The researchers solved the problem by conducting a post program survey on participant but it was not very helpful because time had already gone by and the research could not be repeated from the beginning.
